2011 In Review

Well, our business meetings were few and far between this past year; we conducted only 2 business meetings.  However, with technology and email we were able to do a lot of things and all in all had a very successful year.

Donations

Rocky Mountain Camp 999 made a total of $3,500 in donations last year!  We supported the following organizations with these donations:

1. $1,000 towards National Military Family Association’s Operation Purple
2. $1,000 to Denver Metro Boys & Girls Club for Gates Camp
3. $500 to the Salvation Army – in support of Woodmen/Assured Life’s involvement in the American Fraternal Alliance annual meeting in Denver and the volunteer event in conjunction with that meeting.
4. $500 to NAG – the Thanksgiving Day feast brought to us annually by Joe Eberle.
5. $500 to the Child Rescue Foundation – for its Santa’s Corner.

Community Service

Although meetings were scarce, we managed some community service projects this year as well.

Join Hands Day found us partnering with Brownie Troop 1581 once again.  We had a Food Drive through Copper Mesa School in Highlands Ranch.  The grand total volunteer hours for this project was 25 hours with a total of 3 members and 16 non-members involved.  77 lbs of food was collected through the project and delivered to the Food Bank of the Rockies. 

In the summer, we once again participated in the Pencil Project for the Child Rescue Foundation.  We collected 9 backpacks filled with school supplies as well as additional supplies like pencils, crayons, crayon markers, colored pencils, boxes of Kleenex, sharpies, etc.   This included the backpacks filled with supplies purchased by Rocky Mountain Camp 999 as well as the $50 the donation received from Tanya Unrein.  Camp 999 and Tanya spent $255 on backpacks and school supplies in support of this project.  

In support of the Society’s Operation Santa’s Elves, Rocky Mountain Camp 999 made a donation to The Child Rescue Foundation’s Santa’s Corner in the amount of $500 . 

Santa’s Corner provides Christmas gifts to children of domestic violence.  Our donation of $500 touched the lives of 20 kids.

Donations

Rocky Mountain Camp 999 made a total of $2,191 in donations last year!  We supported the following organizations with these donations:

• Boys & Girls Club of Metro Denver Gates Camp – $500
• Junior Achievement – $100
• Food Bank of Rockies – $500
• N.A.G. Thanksgiving Dinners for Needy Families & Homeless – $500
• Child Rescue Foundation’s Santa’s Corner – $500
• Sameritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Child – $91

We touched many lives with our donations this past year! 

Community Service

Although meetings were scarce, we managed some community service projects this last year.

Our Join Hands Day project, May Baskets for the Elderly, logged a total of 61 hours of service.  We partnered with Brownie Troop 1581 and Girl Scout Troop 2670 to decorate and fill 40 May Baskets with tea packets, an African Violet and sugarless candy for residents of The Manor on Marston Lake in Littleton, Colorado.  It was a great event!

In the summer, we once again participated in the Pencil Project for the Child Rescue Foundation.  We collected 13 backpacks filled with school supplies as well as additional needed supplies.  We logged 26 hours of service for this project and spent $169.76 in camp 999 funds to purchase some of the backpacks and supplies.  Other backpacks were donated by members and non-members.

In support of the National Member Food Drive, and in lieu of an actual food drive this year, Rocky Mountain Camp 999 opted to donate $500 to the Food Bank of the Rockies.  The reason for the donation rather than collecting food is that we were able to impact more hungry families with a monetary donation as demonstrated in the graphic posted in the Rocky Mountain Camp 999 blog of October 18, 201o.

In support of the Society’s Operation Santa’s Elves, Rocky Mountain Camp 999 made a donation to The Child Rescue Foundation’s Santa’s Corner in the amount of $500 and participated in Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Child. 

Santa’s Corner provides Christmas gifts to children of domestic violence.  Our donation of $500 touched the lives of 25 kids. 

For Operation Christmas Child, the camp collected 15 gift-filled shoe boxes that are provided to children of under-developed countries in all parts of the world.  Also, we had 1 member that volunteered at the Operation Christmas Child distribution center in Denver.  All total, we logged 9 hours of service for Operation Santa’s Elves.

Election of Officers for 2011

On January 26, 2011, Rocky Mountain Camp 999 had its election/installation meeting at Maggianos Restaurant with 9 members present.  The minutes of the meeting can be found under “Meeting Minutes” located in the right panel.  The current Banker’s Report can be found there as well.

The Verdict Is In! 

Rocky Mountain Camp 999 has decided to donate $500 to the Food Bank of the Rockies in support of Woodmen of the World and/or Assured Life Association’s national member food drive.  As our President said, a picture is worth a thousand words!   Just look at this graphic taken from the Food Bank of the Rockies website: 

A monetary donation actually makes more of an impact than spending the same amount of money for food at the grocery store.  So, remember the Growth Ring Matching Gift program.  Stretch your $10 donation into a $20 donation and double the amount of food shown in this graphic. 

A Volunteer Opportunity Awaits!

But as fraternalist, we live for the volunteering and charity work.  It’s in our blood.  Getting out and actually doing the shopping for our food drive, for example, makes us feel good about what we are doing and what it means to those that we are helping.  To get our volunteer fix for the food drive, RMC 999 will schedule a day to volunteer at the Food Bank next year (currently all Saturday volunteer hours are booked through 2010).  So watch your email and the Rocky Mountain Camp 999 Blog for details.

Joanne  Kappel, Executive Director of Child Rescue Foundation, picked up our supplies yesterday.  She reported that an estimated 1,500 kids were in need this year.  That is up from 900 last year.  This makes our efforts worth while, even though when you hear that 1,500 kids are in need, our contribution seems so small.  To this, Joanne says, “It took professionals to build the Titanic, but amateurs built the ark.  When we all make a difference, no matter how big or small, our world becomes a better place for our kids.  You all are tremendous and we appreciate you!”

Joanne delivered our supplies to counselors who work directly with the kids that will receive our donations here in Denver.  In creating an ongoing relationship with the Child Rescue Foundation we can continue to impact kids right here in Denver who are victims of domestic violence and homeless.  Thanks, again for helping with this year’s Pencil Project!

Pencil Project Underway

Rocky Mountain Camp 999 of Woodmen of the World is sponsoring a school supply drive for the Child Rescue Foundation’s Pencil Project for the month of July 2010 again this year.  The Child Rescue Foundation, Inc. is a Colorado Not-for-Profit Corporation whose mission is to raise the awareness of family violence and providing resources for families struggling with family violence.  All school supplies collected will go to kids in crisis throughout Metro Denver.  You can check out their website by using the link in the sidebar to the right. 

You are invited to participate with us in this school supply drive.  Bring your school supplies to Building 5 at 8000 East Maplewood Ave, Suite 105; Greenwood Village, CO 80111.  We will close the collection process on August 16, so you have until that time to drop off school supplies.

We have attached a Supplies List for each grade level.  If you are not able to purchase all items on the list for a particular grade level, please do what you can we will supplement with additional supplies or backpacks where needed.  Please mark the grade level on your supplies in some way so that we can match it up with a student at that grade level.  If you have any questions, please contact Jerry Christensen at 303-468-3773.

Food Drive 2010

Woodmen’s Denver Fall Food Drive

Our Denver Fall Food Drive will take place Wednesday, November 11, 2009.  Drop off your non-perishable food items to the home office and they will be delivered to the Rocky Mountain Food Food Bank in Denver.  We are having a luncheon for all participants of the food drive at noon on Wednesday, November 11 so let Jerry Christensen know if you plan to attend the luncheon (if you have not done so already).  Jerry’s email address is jlc@denverwoodmen.com.

Operation Christmas Child 

Once again, Rocky Mountain Camp 999 is participating in Operation Christmas Child as its Operation Santa’s Elves campaign for Woodmen of the World/Assured Life Association.  Operation Christmas Child is a worldwide outreach program of Samaritans Purse.  During the months of November and December, gift-filled shoe boxes are collected and distributed to hurting children around the world.  Rocky Mountain Camp 999 is collecting shoe boxes to be dropped off at the home office before noon on December 3.

Members of Rocky Mountain Camp 999 are also volunteering at the OCC processing center on Thursday, Decembre 3, 2009 from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.  Be sure to let Michaela know if you are interested in volunteering.  Michaela’s email address is mfranklin@denverwoodmen.com.

This morning, Executive Director and Founder of Child Rescue Foundation, Inc., Joanne Kappel (pictured here with Michaela Franklin, RMC 999 Consul Commander on the left and Deborah West, RMC 999 Banker on the right), picked up the supplies we had gathered.  This organization exists and runs solely on the volunteer efforts of their staff and all those who volunteer their time in support of this organization.  Child Rescue Foundation, Inc. reaches over 15,000 children per year through its various projects.  The Pencil Project alone impacts over 900 kids.  So, those of you that donated to our drive can take pride in knowing that your donation will go directly to a child today and immediately impact their life.  Great job, Rocky Mountain Camp 999 and other Means-Knaus tenants.
